Development plans for Stockport Town Centre

Stockport Council's planning and highways committee has approved a £100 million redevelopment of the Grand Central site. Stockport residents will no doubt welcome this. The site is soul-less and unwelcoming. Not at all what is wanted as the town centre leisure venue. The nightclub and bar on the site were so troublesome that they have been closed for a number of years. The new development will include a new hotel and apartments.

Stockport MP Ann Coffey said: "I think it's really, really good - the best thing that could have happened. The problem within Grand Central was it didn't have the right combination of family and nightlife, which resulted in it getting difficult reputation and putting off families. This clearly combines family entertainment with building on Stockport's strengths as a service centre."

She added: "We desperately need hotel accommodation. I would prefer that if people have business in Stockport they spend the night in Stockport rather than going into Manchester and spending their money there." Read more....

More impressive plans for Stockport town centre

Stockport town centre doesnt seem to have changed very much for a long time, whilst neighbouring Manchester has galloped away reinventing itself. Now there are plans afoot to bring about big changes in Stockport.

The Princes Street area between Debenhams and Sainsbury's is set to become part of the shopping centre. In simple terms, the shopping centre is to be extended across towards the motorway. The new retail units on Prince's Street will have trading space on two floors with new residential apartments above, with further new apartments over the extended retail units on the south side of the street. The redevelopment of Merseyway will provide 24,585m2 net additional commercial floorspace which doubles the present size of the shopping centre. There will also be 260 new residential apartment units.

Some of the upper floorspace levels in the existing Merseyway buildings will be converted for leisure use, including a health and fitness complex. This will both extend the activity in the Merseyway area into the evening and bring underused upper storey and rooftop space into better use, as well as enhancing the marketability of the new residential units.

Between the river Mersey and the pub on the corner, facing onto the A6, currently there is a large office block. The planners are proposing to knock this down to plant trees and grass.......brave stuff!
